Ranjit Barot, a talented percussionist, drummer, and music composer, believes that the information explosion and social media have both positive and negative implications. He sees these platforms as empowering but also potentially alienating. Barot notes that some musicians heavily reliant on social media may lack the skills needed to excel in live performances, while other talented artists struggle with anonymity due to their limited engagement online.

Having experienced various trends over two-thirds of his life, Barot appreciates the importance of embracing change but urges individuals to be discerning about the impact of each trend. He emphasizes the value of collaboration and surrounding oneself with more talented individuals to continuously improve. Barot values being challenged by those better than himself rather than being the dominant figure in a group.

Reflecting on his interactions with esteemed musicians like Ustad Zakir Hussain, John McLaughlin, and AR Rahman, Barot finds the experience rewarding. He believes that real music should stand up to the works of legends like Sting, Prince, and Michael Jackson, emphasizing the need for substance and maintaining high standards.

Although Barot acknowledges the joys of pursuing a career in music, he also recognizes the challenges, noting that music is widely consumed but often undervalued in terms of compensation.Subscription services typically charge a monthly fee, with only a small portion going to the artists. AI is considered a useful tool for those seeking convenience, although it cannot replace truly skilled individuals. While it may weed out those lacking talent, it cannot substitute individuals with genuine talent and dedication. The music industry needs more artists creating high-quality music to revamp the current scenario. Despite challenges in the Indian music industry, there is optimism for change. Critics point out that the industry leans towards producing mainstream content, lacking innovation and diversity. While there are notable exceptions such as AP Dhillon and Diljit Dosanjh, more artists are needed to shift the landscape towards quality music. One person who has greatly influenced the journey of an individual is their mother, Sitara Devi, a renowned classical kathak dancer known for her dedication and passion. Her indomitable spirit has inspired her child to pursue innovation, expression, and meaningful interactions. An upcoming performance titled "Beat Route," featuring director Roysten Abel and rhythmic expert Ranjit Barot leading a collaboration with ten master folk percussionists from Rajasthan and Kerala, will be held at Chowdiah Memorial Hall on October 5th from 5 pm to 8 pm.
